Enzo Maresca says he’s pleased with Marc Guéhi’s reaction to Saturday’s Premier League defeat at Aston Villa.

The England international has been central to our fine start to the season, playing every minute in our table-topping league start until his half-time substitution at Villa Park.

While Maresca says Guéhi has acknowledged his mistake in the buildup to Villa’s opener in the 2-1 loss, the manager is impressed with the defender’s ability to shake off the disappointment.

“I’m completely, especially in this moment, happy with Marc,” said Maresca in Tuesday’s press conference before the Carabao Cup visit of Brighton on Wednesday.

“The way he reacted was fantastic. He is a top guy, a leader, one of the captains and I love Marc to be honest.

“When they make some mistakes, they recognise. Marc is aware now.

“He’s played all minutes since the start of the season with us and the international team. In the last two weeks he didn’t play Champions League game, he played 45 minutes the other day so he’s completely okay.”

Rico Lewis replaced Guéhi in defence at Aston Villa, slotting in at right-back with Abdukodir Khusanov moving into the middle.

The 21-year-old has only started against Norwich and AEK Athens so far, but Maresca says he’s prepared to utilise the Academy graduate in defence or further forward.

“He can play both,” said Maresca when asked about which role he favours for Lewis.

“In this moment, we have Nunes that has the injury so Lewis was good in the second half against Villa.

“He can play full-back or midfield, it depends where we need him.”
