Shaw opened the scoring on 66 minutes but Elisabeth Terland levelled matters at the death on 89 minutes for the hosts with a smart finish at Progress With Unity Stadium.
City went into the game on the back of six Women’s Super League victories on the spin to open the season but United were in form, too, having won their last three WSL games.
Our No.9 insisted the Blues were not surprised by the tightness of the tussle that played out.
“It’s always a difficult game when you play against United,” said Shaw.
“Both teams going into the game were trying to get the three points. We weren’t able to do it but we knew it was going to be a fight and a difficult game.
“They came into the game after some positive results, which we knew as well.”
Shaw brought up a milestone in the 1-1 draw with United - her 100th WSL appearance with 91 goals coming in that century of games.
Before kick-off, she had already scored 12 more goals than any other player managed in their first 100 outings, adding another against the Red Devils.
Shaw also became the first player to score in their first seven starts to a WSL season and remains the leading goalscorer in Manchester derbies in the Women’s Super League, scoring five times in eight starts.
Hitting 100 appearances was a proud moment, stressed Shaw post-match.
“Playing 100 games in the league is definitely a wonderful feeling,” she added.
“I try to do all the right things and be ready for each game and by doing that achievements like this happen.
“Playing in England, for me it’s the best league in the world, you’re playing against the best players in the world as well.
“So it’s a challenge but it’s one I really enjoy and it’s why I have been here for so many years.”
