Andrée Jeglertz believes our gutsy 2-1 win at London City Lionesses showed his side are capable of winning football matches in a variety of ways.

The Blues had to weather a significant London City storm to pick up the three points, with the hosts squandering several gilt-edged chances across the 90.

But second half goals from Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp either side of Jana Fernandez’s header were enough to seal a huge win and end the hosts’ nine-match unbeaten run.

It was a gritty display from the WSL champions, and Jeglertz was delighted by the character and desire his players showed to get the result in difficult circumstances.

“I think it’s not just the last few minutes, the whole game is stressful. It’s always like that when you’re on the touchline,” our Head Coach said.

“We said afterwards, the players should be so proud of what they put into this game. We’ve learned we’re a great team who can keep the ball for 75% of the game and win that way, or we can win like this.

“We played against a great opponent who were dominating parts of the game, but we dealt with it, created some great chances and scored two goals.

“That quality to win in different ways is good to have, but the players also have to adapt to that and feel it’s okay to not have the ball all the time, take pride in defending and only having three or four chances but finishing off those chances.”

Our win at London City Lionesses came less than three days after a battling 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, and just seven after another hard-fought stalemate at Manchester United.

It’s been a demanding week for the Blues, and Jeglertz admits he and his players are pleased to have a week before our next assignment against West Ham United at the Joie Stadium.

However, he feels the players have learned a great deal in this challenging period and couldn’t fault their efforts.

He added: “It’s also our third game in seven or eight days which is tough for the players, but they still did their job and worked hard.

“We learned so much about ourselves and like in the Champions League we will play very good teams like this but can win the game.”

“It’s good for the girls to have a couple of days where we can recover, find new energy.

“Coming into the next period it’ll be even more intense, so we just need to make sure we use this week in a good way and are ready to go again on Saturday.”
