Andrée Jeglertz says City’s mentality got us through Sunday’s 3-2 Barclays Women’s Super League victory over Brighton.

We found ourselves three goals up in just 17 minutes thanks to a clinical Bunny Shaw brace and Niamh Charles’ first City goal but the visitors pegged us back with two strikes of their own before half-time.

City held firm after that and eventually claimed all three points to extend our 100% record at the start of the WSL season to six games.

While Jeglertz says it wasn’t the perfect game, the boss praised the way his side managed the game and got the result in the second half.

“The first 20 minutes was very good but then we became a little bit comfortable, which is always dangerous for a football team,” he began.

“A good team like Brighton can punish you and that’s what happened. We were a little bit annoyed by that, feeling that we gave them the opportunity to get back in the game.

“We talked about that at half-time but the second half was great, that mentality and how we attacked, pressed.

“A lot of things in the second half were very good. We were so calm and you could see at the end of the game that we were leading by one and the goalkeeper is playing to midfielders and we play it around them.

“That shows the belief and confidence in the group.”

Both of Shaw’s goals came from Lauren Hemp crosses, with the pair linking up to great effect in the early weeks of the campaign.

With seven strikes from six games, Shaw is now in pole position for yet another Golden Boot, while Hemp has been one of the league’s standout players so far.

Jeglertz was full of praise for the pair after the game.

“They are amazing, both of them. Great football players and great team-mates,” he said.

“They’ve won so much individually but also they work every day for the team. I’m so pleased to have them in my team.”

City won without Beth Mead, but Jeglertz says it’s not a long-term issue for the England international.

“She felt something,” he said.

“We made a decision to be smart and not take any risks and decided to keep her out.”
