Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp were the matchwinners in a 2-1 victory, scoring second-half goals either side of Jana Fernandez’s finish for the hosts.
Fans had to wait until the 53rd minute to see the deadlock broken, although the game hadn’t been short of drama and intrigue until that point.
When the goal eventually came, it was of course the deadly Shaw who sprinted in behind, rounded the goalkeeper and picked her spot despite retreating defenders protecting the goal.
London CIty, who have started the campaign well themselves, gave it all they had to get back into the game and were rewarded after 72 minutes when Fernandez headed home a Mapi Leon corner.
City showed the true mark of defending champions then though by immediately retaking the lead.
This time it was Hemp’s determination to get on the end of Mary Fowler’s whipped cross that made all the difference.
We held firm from there to seal a vital three points and our seventh win in eight WSL games so far.
