“I just want to help Phil to be the Phil we all want,” he said.
“First of all for him because he needs to enjoy football and second because I know how good he is. Phil in a good shape and mood, he can win games.
“Treble season he was fantastic, season after he won Player of the Year.
“He struggled a little bit, but I told him it’s my duty to help him. He’s from the house. He’s from me. He’s a City fan.”
Club captain Bernardo Silva left City this summer after nine years in Manchester.
That’s left space in the captain’s group, which Maresca says will be filled in the weeks to come.
“We have three players - Ruben, Rodri, Erling - we need some more because Bernardo left but we will decide about that.”
